Handmade and Haida
John Estey (Yáahl íiwaans) from the Y'akwə'lanas Raven Clan of Old Massett, Haida Gwaii uses the Devil’s Club plant. His family makes it into a salve that helps relieve inflammation, skin issues, and sore muscles. The leftover plant parts are used for protection and good fortune in handmade bead jewelry. John’s daughter is learning cedar bark weaving and plans to have items ready for the market. They will also carry authentic Haida-designed fabric by Shelly Samuels of Yasakw Designs, sold online by the meter and in precuts at markets.
John also offers three other salves made with:
Sidekick Salve with plantain and nettle
Skin Soothing Salve with yarrow and dandelion
Fireweed Salve with fireweed, plantain, and kokum butter
